PERIODONTAL CLEANING NJ

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Many patients have some degree of gum disease. Gingivitis, the first stage of periodontal disease causes inflammation of the gums. Untreated gingivitis often leads to periodontitis, which can be serious.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontitis occurs when the inner layer of your gums and bone pull away from the teeth, forming pockets. These pockets, or spaces between teeth and gums collect debris and becomes infected. Gum tissue and bone are destroyed as the disease progresses.

The dentist will determine the extent of gum disease to determine if a deep cleaning is needed. This is also called scaling and root planing and involves cleaning between your gums and teeth down into the roots.

Maintenance cleaning may be needed to halt progression of periodontal disease by removing any build-up of tartar and plaque above and below your gum line. Symptoms such as red, swollen or irritated gums, an unpleasant taste or persistent bad breath, bleeding gums, or loose teeth should not be ignored. Contact Us – We can help.

Periodontal Cleaning

Also called deep cleaning, scaling, or root planing, the periodontal cleaning procedure involves removing tartar or calculus, removing bacteria and debris that has been collecting under the patient’s gums.

The gums and teeth will be a bit sensitive for a couple days after the procedure.

Once the plaque has been removed, the gums begin to heal and will form a better seal around the teeth. With good dental hygiene after the cleaning this should take about six to eight weeks. Regular checkups and professional dental cleanings prevent the need for periodontal cleaning.
